Suwayda, Al-

(also Soueida), a city in southern Syria, in the province of al-Suwayda. Population, 29,500 (1970). Al-Suwayda, a highway junction, is the center of an agricultural region that produces cereals, vegetables, melons, and fruits, including grapes. The city has enterprises of the food-processing industry.
