Vavrinec z Brezové, Lavrentii
Vavřinec z Březové, Lavrentii
Born circa 1370; died after 1437. Czech chronicler, poet, and writer.
Vavřinec graduated from Charles University and in 1393 received the title of master of liberal arts. He belonged to the moderate wing of the Hussite revolutionary movement. His work The Hussite Chronicle is a valuable source for the study of the first years of this movement. He was also the author of a number of poems written in the Czech language; among the works attributed to him are satirical poems in which the author opposes Emperor Sigismund, the Catholic Church, and the Crusaders and defends the Hussites’ program.
