Tkach, Dmitrii Vasil’evich
Born Aug. 29 (Sept. 11), 1912, in the village of Orlik, in what is now Kobeliaki Raion, Poltava Oblast. Soviet Ukrainian writer. Member of the CPSU since 1943.
Tkach graduated from the teachers’ institute of Krivoi Rog in 1940. He served in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. First published in 1932, Tkach is the author of many novels and novellas, including A Steep Wave (1954), the trilogy Generation of the Strong, dedicated to the miners of the Krivoi Rog region (1957; Russian translation, 1958), The Arena (1960; Russian translation, 1963), Commandant of the Sea (1960), Our Dormitory Life (1966), Storm and Calm (1971), There Will Be No Trial (1971), and A Calm Sea (1974). Many of Tkach’s writings have been for and about children. He has been awarded two orders and medals.
