Established: Designated a National Historic Site on February 14, 1949. Designated a World Heritage Site on December 9, 1983.
Location:In the city of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Special Features:Park includes the forts of El Morro, San Cristóbal, and and San Juan dela Cruz (also called El Cañuelo), plusbastions, powder houses, and three fourths of the city walls.Surrounding the old, colonial portion of SanJuan, these massive masonry fortifications, oldest in the territoriallimits of the United States, were begun by the Spaniards beginning in1539 to protect a strategic harbor guarding the sea lanes to the NewWorld. Mostof the walls we see today were added later in a period of tremendousconstruction from the 1760's to the 1780's.
