    Islands in northwestern WA, bounded on west and northwest by Haro Strait, on north and northeast by Georgia Strait, and on south by Juan de Fuca Strait. Organized Oct 31, 1873 (prior to statehood) from Whatcom County. Name Origin: For Saint John the Baptist, cousin and baptizer of Jesus. Some sources suggest the county may have been named for San Juan Island, for Juan Francisco de Eliza, governor of the Spanish settlement at Nootka Sound in the late 18th century, or for Juan de Fuca, supposedly a Greek navigator in Spanish service
