a historic province in northern Portugal in the Douro River basin. The province contains the districts of Vila Real and Braganca and parts of Viseu and Guarda. It has an area of more than 10,000 sq km and a population of approximately 600,000 (1970). The principal city is Vila Real. The main branch of the economy is agriculture. Grains and grapes are grown in the region, and cattle are raised there.
