Acholeplasma (ă-kō-lē-plas'mă), A genus of bacteria that has characteristics identical to those of the genus Mycoplasma, with the exception that the acholeplasmas do not require sterol for growth; saprophytic and parasitic species occur. Acholeplasma appears as a contaminant in tissue culture media that have been supplemented with animal sera. The type species is Acholeplasma laidlawii. |
