SonatinaenUKSonatinaa short and technically simpler sonata; that is, a cyclic work in which the first movement is in sonata form. Sonatinas may also have single-movement forms. Sonatinas are often used for teaching purposes, for example, those of Clementi, Mozart, and Beethoven. In the 20th century, sonatinas have also been written as artistic works of value in and of themselves. They exhibit the characteristics of the sonata of the classical period, for example, Ravel’s Sonatina for Piano. In the 19th century the term “sonatina” was often used to designate a work in sonata form without development. sonatinaenUK
