remifentanil

remifentanil

A narcotic painkiller used during the induction or maintenance of general anaesthesia. The use of painkillers during general anaesthesia is not, as it may seem, pointless. Painful stimuli act on the autonomic nervous system causing effects that can interfere with the smooth conduct of the anaesthetic and the post-operative period. A brand name is Ultiva.
