Vera Mencik Menčik, Vera (also, Vera Menchik-Stevenson). Born Feb. 16, 1906, in Moscow; died June 27, 1944, in London. First woman world chess champion. A Czech by nationality, Menčik lived in Moscow until 1921, when she settled in England. She was the undefeated women’s world champion from 1927 until the end of her life, winning victories in the first through seventh women’s world champion-ships. Menčik also competed successfully in the international men’s tournaments. She tied for second place at the 1929 tournament in Ramsgate (England), half a point behind J. R. Capablanca; second at the London tournament in 1934; third at Maribor (Yugoslavia) in 1934; third at Great Yarmouth (England) in 1935; and third at Montevideo (Uruguay) in 1939.
