(1) The name of a semicircular dome that is part of an ancient volcano near the Vesuvius crater.
(2) The name for a nested crater consisting of an old volcano at varying stages of destruction that includes a younger volcanic cone in its caldera or crater. Examples of sommas are Mount Somma, which surrounds Vesuvius, and Avachinskaia Sopka on Kamchatka.
