Philosophical Societies and Organizations

Philosophical Societies and Organizations

The earliest forms of philosophical organization were the schools of philosophy of ancient Greece, such as the Lyceum and Plato’s Academy, and the faculties of philosophy at medieval universities. During the Renaissance, a particular circle of humanists would form its own academy—for example, the Platonic Academy in Florence. The national academies of modern times have their own divisions of philosophy; moreover, various schools of philosophy arose in the process of international communication among scholars, and special philosophical societies and organizations were formed.

In Russia, there was a philosophical society at the University of St. Petersburg.
