Established: 1953.
Location:Lower central Michigan, 25 miles south of Saginaw Bay.
Facilities:Hiking trails (12 miles), wildlife viewing sites, learning center.
Activities:Boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, educational programs.
Special Features:More than 10,000 years ago, much of the area, including present-day Shiawassee NWR, was covered by a large glacial lake. Evidence of the ancient lakebed can still be seen.
Habitats: 9,427 acres consisting of bottomland-hardwood forests, rivers, marshes, managed pools, fields, and croplands. Authorized future land acquisitions would expand refuge's present boundaries by 7,500 acres.
Access: Year round during daylight hours.
Wild life: Trumpetere swan, tundra swan, wood duck, blue-winged teal, northern shoveler, bats, damselflies, dragonflies, butterflies, river otter, white-tailed deer, coyote, weasels, grasshoppers, and turtles.
