Safarian, Samvel Arakelovich

Born June 9 (22), 1902, in Shusha, Nagornyi Karabakh; died Jan. 9, 1969, in Yerevan. Soviet architect. Honored Art Worker of the Armenian SSR (1940).

Safarian graduated from the architecture division of the engineering department of the University of Yerevan in 1928. Beginning in 1932, he taught at the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute. Among the buildings he designed are the pavilion of the Armenian SSR at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in Moscow (1939, with K. S. Alabian), the second Government House of the Armenian SSR in Yerevan (with V. A. Arevshatian and R. S. Israelian), the buildings of the medical and agricultural institutes in Yerevan (completed 1955), the complex of the Biura-kan Astrophysical Observatory (1956) and the clinical sanatorium in Arzni (1958), and the ensemble of buildings of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR in Yerevan (1950–70; the two buildings of the Scientific Research Institute were done with M. M. Manvelian). Safarian has been awarded three orders and various medals.
