Sherman, Thomas West

Sherman, Thomas West

(1813–79) soldier; born in Newport, R.I. The Civil War's "other Sherman," he was a West Point graduate (1836) who fought in Florida, the Mexican War, and on the frontier. A stern disciplinarian and thus unpopular with Civil War volunteer troops, he commanded the Port Royal, S.C., expedition (1861) and afterward fought in Mississippi and Louisiana, where he lost a leg in action at Port Hudson (1863).
