USA and Canada, Institute of the

 

a research institution of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR that studies the economy, social relations, and domestic and foreign policies of the USA and Canada. Located in Moscow, the institute was founded in 1968; it was called the Institute of the USA until 1974.

Economic research conducted by the institute is concentrated on the study of state monopoly regulation, scientific and technological progress and its consequences, and administrative systems. In the field of social relations and domestic policy the institute mainly studies social structure, the labor movement, the racial problem, political parties and movements, and the state mechanism, while in the field of foreign policy it mainly studies regional trends and foreign policy doctrines. The institute devotes considerable attention to Soviet-American and Soviet-Canadian relations. Since 1970 it has published the journal SShA:Ekonomika, politika, ideologiia (The USA: Economy, Politics, Ideology).
