phenomenological psychology

a school of psychology that emphasizes the importance of the unique, subjective experience of the person. It regards the perception of events by the person as crucial to understanding why the person reacts as he or she does. The approach was influenced by HUSSERL and has been particularly influential within the HUMANISTIC MOVEMENT, where the SELF with its unique perspective is central and the realization of human potential, or SELF ACTUALIZATION, is the motivator of action. This perspective is seen in the PERSON-CENTRED COUNSELLING of Carl ROGERS.
