Shera, Jesse Hauk

(1903–82) librarian, educator; born in Oxford, Ohio. After graduating from Columbia University (Ph.D. 1944) he held successive positions in government and academia. After several years at the University of Chicago Library, he became dean of the Western Reserve University School of Library Science (1952–82) where he established the doctoral program in librarianship and edited the university press. Despite a severe visual handicap, he was a prolific author and a pioneer in the field of information retrieval.
