[′sam·pliŋ ′vōlt‚mēd·ər] (engineering) A special type of voltmeter that detects the instantaneous value of an input signal at prescribed times by means of an electronic switch connecting the signal to a memory capacitor; it is particularly effective in detecting high-frequency signals (up to 12 gigahertz) or signals mixed with noise.
