traffic officer

traffic officer

an individual authorized to carry out assigned duties connected with, or intended to facilitate or to be conducive or incidental to the management of traffic on the relevant road network; or the performance of any other functions of the appropriate national authority (in its capacity as a traffic authority or highway authority). A new type of enforcement official in England and Wales who is not a police officer. It is envisaged that they will, among other things, help manage collision scenes, remove abandoned, damaged or broken-down vehicles, clear debris or animals on carriageways and undertake high-visibility patrols. They will help the police and inform the police of road traffic offences. They have powers to direct traffic and it is an offence to impersonate a traffic officer.
