Urzhum Swine
Urzhum Swine
a breed of swine grown for meat. The Urzhum swine was developed on farms of Kirov Oblast by crossing local long-eared sows with boars of the Large White breed; the breed was confirmed in 1957. The animals have a long, low body. Adult boars weigh 280–380 kg, and sows 230–60 kg. They bear ten to 12 young. The animals are fattened for meat and bacon production. The young at six or seven months weigh about 100 kg. The swine require 3.9 feed units per kilogram of weight increase. Urzhum boars are used for commercial crossbreeding with sows of the Large White breed. Urzhum swine are raised in Kirov Oblast, the Mari ASSR, and northern and northeastern regions of the RSFSR.
