Urungu

Urungu

(in Mongolian, Bulgan-Gol), a river in the Mongolian People’s Republic (MPR) and China. The Urungu measures approximately 700 km in length and drains an area of about 50,000 sq km. Originating in the Mongolian Altai, it flows through the MPR primarily in a narrow, deep valley and in China along the Dzungarian Plain. In its lower course the channel migrates, and the river alternately empties into Lake Uliungur and Lake BagaNur. High water occurs in summer. The mean flow rate in the lower course is 45 cu m per sec. In winter the river freezes. The Urungu is used for irrigation. Beavers live in the upper course.
