samizdat (publication)(Russian, literally "self publishing") Theprocess of disseminating documentation via undergroundchannels. Originally referred to photocopy duplication anddistribution of banned books in the former Soviet Union; nowrefers by obvious extension to any less-than-officialpromulgation of textual material, especially rare, obsolete,or never-formally-published computer documentation. Samizdatis obviously much easier when one has access tohigh-bandwidth networks and high-quality laser printers.
Strictly, "samizdat" only applies to distribution of neededdocuments that are otherwise unavailable, and not toduplication of material that is available for sale undercopyright.
