Tisza Culture

a Neolithic culture of the fourth millennium B.C. that existed in the Tisza River basin—an area that today is part of Hungary. Settlements were located along the banks of rivers. In the south such settlements were permanent and had rectangular ground-level dwellings; in the north they were temporary, with subterranean dwellings. Polychrome pottery was common; it included vessels for grain storage, footed bowls, pitchers, and basins. Work implements included stone adzes and hammers as well as horn axes. The people of this culture were chiefly engaged in agriculture, stock raising, fishing, and hunting. Flexed burials have also been found.
