biliary stent

biliary stent

A plastic or metallic tube inserted into a stenosed or obstructed bile duct to improve bile flow. Metallic stents are used palliatively to manage malignancy, but not benign disease, as they have poor long-term patency rates, in contrast to plastic stents which have a 12-month patency rate of over 75%.
