[′tȯt ¦band ′am‚ēd·ər] (engineering) A modification of the permanent-magnet movable-coil ammeter in which the jeweled bearings and control springs are replaced by a taut metallic band rigidly held at the ends; the coil is firmly attached to the band, and restoring torque is supplied by twisting of the band.
