Taurage

(tourägā`), Ger. Tauroggen, town, W Lithuania, on the Yura River. Dating from the 13th cent., Taurage belonged to Prussia from 1691 to 1793, when it passed to Russia. It was incorporated into independent Lithuania in 1920. Taurage

 

a city and administrative center of Tauragé Raion, Lithuanian SSR. Situated on the Jura River (Neman River basin). Railroad station on the Šiauliai-Sovetsk line. Population, 22,000(1974).

Tauragé has a computer parts plant, a ceramics plant, a fruit-and-vegetable combine, a meat-packing plant, a creamery, and a logging and timber distribution establishment. The city’s educational and cultural institutions include a polytechnicum and a people’s amateur theater.

The Convention of Tauroggen of 1812 was signed in Tauragé, which was called Tauroggen in German.
