villin

vil·lin

(vil'in), [MIM*193040] An actin-binding protein that, at low calcium ion concentrations, nucleates polymerization of actin filaments; micromolar Ca2+ causes villin to sever actin filaments into short fragments.

villin

An actin-binding, severing and bundling protein found in the MICROVILLI of the apical membranes of certain cells, including the canalicular microvilli of hepatocytes. Abnormalities in the expression of the gene for villin, resulting in the absence of this protein are thought to be a cause of such liver disorders as biliary atresia.
