Abu Daghbal Al-Jumahi

Dates of birth and death unknown. Arab poet of the second half of the seventh and beginning of the eighth centuries.

Abu Daghbal al-Jumahi was born of distinguished parentage and fought in the internecine war of the caliphate on the side of the opponents of the Umayyads. He was one of the precursors of the so-called new tendency in poetry. He wrote eulogies and elegies that had political content. His short poems are simple, elegant, and full of deep feeling; their main theme is love and all the obstacles it must overcome. His poetry has been highly valued both by Arab men of letters of the Middle Ages and by contemporary scholars.
