[′shel ‚mäd·əl] (nuclear physics) A model of the nucleus in which the shell structure is either postulated or is a consequence of other postulates; especially the model in which the nucleons act as independent particles filling a preassigned set of energy levels as permitted by the quantum numbers and Pauli principle.
