Truten
Truten’
(The Drone), a weekly satirical journal published by N. I. Novikov in St. Petersburg from May 1, 1769, to Apr. 27, 1770. Truten’ carried on a dispute with the journal Vsiakaia vsiachina (All Sorts of Things), which was published anonymously by Catherine II. The debate centered on the role of satire and its types, with preference given to social satire. Many articles touched on issues of the day, including the status of serfs. Most of the contributions were printed anonymously, although scholars have attributed individual articles to Novikov and D. I. Fonvizin. Other contributors included A. O. Ablesimov, V. I. Maikov, and M. I. Popov.
