A perennial herb, the root of which contains allantoin; it is demulcent, nutrient and tonic.
 
Chinese medicine
Solomon’s seal is used for anorexia, fractures, gastric ulcers, hypoglycaemia, malnutrition, sexual dysfunction and urinary frequency; it is believed by some Chinese herbalists to be an aphrodisiac.
 
Herbal medicine
Solomon’s seal has been used in Western herbal medicine as an antiemetic and haemostatic, the effects which are uncertain; it may be applied topically for wounds and skin ulcers.
