relationship chart (REL chart)

a means of depicting the pattern and extent of interdepartmental movement of items within a factory. REL or cross charts are used to collect information about relationships between factory departments, identifying the numbers of items per day moved from each department and which department receives them. This information can be used to establish the best relative location for each department, thus assisting in planning FACTORY LAYOUT.
