Tatev University
Tatev University
a scientific and educational center of medieval Armenia, located in the Tatev Monastery. Tatev University existed for about 70 years, from the mid-14th century to 1415, its activities being alternately suspended and resumed. It flourished from 1370 to 1410 under the direction of the prominent scholars Ovanes Vorotnetsi and Grigor Tatevatsi. It had three faculties: philosophy and theology, calligraphy and miniatures, and music. It had about 60 to 80 students. The curriculum included all branches of medieval scholarship, including physics, mathematics, theology, philosophy, astronomy, history, and grammar. Several textbooks written at the university have been preserved. The Armenian poet and philosopher Arakel Siunetsi, the commentator Matteos Dzhugaetsi, and the historian Tovma Metsopetsi were among the university’s students.
