solidus History a gold coin of the Byzantine empire Solidus a Roman gold coin first minted in AD. 309, under Emperor Constantine. Its weight was 1/72 the weight of a Roman pound, or 4.55 g. In 314 it was introduced into the western part of the Roman Empire, and in 324 throughout the entire empire. Borrowed from Rome by Germanic peoples, it served as the model for gold coins during the early Middle Ages in Western Europe.
