shear thinning[′shir ‚thin·iŋ] (fluid mechanics) Viscosity reduction of non-Newtonian fluids (for example, polymers and their solutions, most slurries and suspensions, lube oils with viscosity-index improvers) that undergo viscosity reductions under conditions of shear stress (that is, viscometric flow). shear thinning
