[′shir ‚bərst] (mining engineering) The explosive breaking of wall rock in a deep mining field by the occurrence of a single shear crack parallel to the face in one of the walls, causing rock behind the shear plane to expand freely into the stope and then to disrupt and fill the place with debris.
