Among the Tiriki, a Luyia people of western Kenya, “dream prophets” are specialists for whom dreaming is regarded as a positive event, whereas for ordinary people dreams are undesirable and to be avoided. The gift of dream prophecy is not inherited or confined to any particular lineages or clans, but elders have always maintained control over its exercise. Tiriki dreams are often viewed as rendezvous with the spirits of dead relatives or friends, perhaps portending one’s own death.
