(Universiteti Shtetëror i Tiranës), the leading research and higher educational institution in Albania.

Founded in 1957, the State University of Tirana has (1975) faculties of natural science, engineering, medicine, history and philosophy, political and juridical sciences, economics, and geology. It also has research institutes of linguistics, history, folklore, and nuclear physics, as well as a computer center. The university’s library has about 400,000 volumes. During the 1974–75 academic year, enrollment was 15,500, and the teaching staff numbered about 900.
