Salmonellosis Infectious disease Swelling of small intestinal mucosa by Salmonella spp, especially S typhi, due to ingestion of contaminated human or animal secretions or food, followed by a 8-48 hr incubation; acute illness lasts 1–2 wks; bacteria are shed in the feces for months to a yr or more Etiology Pet reptiles, consumption of poultry Clinical Fever with afternoon spikes, nonspecific abdominal pain, anorexia, weight loss, changed sensorium Management Generally symptomatic; if needed, chloramphenical, or multidrug antibiotic regimen Prognosis Poor if perforation occurs
