Pffiferdaj

Pffiferdaj

First Sunday in SeptemberAn Alsatian festival of medieval origin, Pffiferdaj—also known as the Day of the Strolling Fiddlers, or Fiddlers' Festival —is celebrated in the city of RibeauvillÉ, France, an area widely known for its wines. In the Middle Ages the Ribeaupierre family started a musicians' union here, and every September the musicians of Alsace gathered to pay homage to the lord of Ribeaupierre by forming a procession to the church of Notre Dame du Dusenbach.
Today the custom continues. Wine flows freely from the fountain in front of the town hall, and a procession of fiddlers and other musicians, often playing old instruments, makes its way through the town. Their costumes and floats recall life in the Middle Ages.
