Rehnquist, William H. (Hubbs)

(1924– ) Supreme Court chief justice; born in Milwaukee, Wis. As assistant attorney general in the Nixon administration (1969–71), he promoted a conservative anticrime position and opposed civil rights measures. President Nixon named him to the U.S. Supreme Court despite opposition from liberal members of Congress. He served as associate justice (1972–86) until President Reagan named him chief justice (1986).
