Rehearsal

Rehearsal

the chief mode of preparing any theatrical performance, including a concert, a variety-stage presentation, or a circus program. The artists rehearse under the guidance of the director. In the musical theater the conductor is also closely involved in the rehearsal; in the ballet theater the ballet master conducts the rehearsal. Through the repeated practice performances of a work—by individual scenes and acts and in its entirety—the director and the performers strive for a faithful presentation of the work’s ideas and the vivid embodiment of its characters or images. There are various types of rehearsals. In a set rehearsal, all the elements of a play’s scenery are checked. A run-through is the rehearsal that precedes the dress rehearsal. The dress rehearsal is the final rehearsal before the opening or first performance, during which the work is performed in costume and with stage properties and in the presence of an audience. In musical theaters there are also concertmaster (solo and ensemble) and chorus rehearsals.
