surface wind surface wind[′sər·fəs ‚wind] (meteorology) The wind measured at a surface observing station; customarily, it is measured at some distance above the ground itself to minimize the distorting effects of local obstacles and terrain. surface windThe wind velocity of air next to the surface. Normally, it is measured at a height of 30 ft (10 m) above the surface of the ground or water. It is generally measured by an anemometer or assessed by a wind sock or another such device.
