regulon

regulon

[′reg·yə‚län] (genetics) In bacteria, a system of genes, formed by one or more operons, which regulate enzyme induction and whose activity is controlled by a single repressor substance.

reg·u·lon

(reg'yū-lon), A set of structural genes, all with the same gene regulation, the gene products of which are involved in the same reaction pathway.

reg·u·lon

(reg'yū-lon) A set of structural genes, all with the same gene regulation, with gene products involved in the same reaction pathway.

regulon

(rĕg′yoo-lŏn) A group of unrelated genes whose transcription is either suppressed or increased by a single protein.

regulon

a system where more than one structural GENE/OPERON, each with its own PROMOTER, is under control of the same regulator molecule, for example, an activator protein or repressor protein. The genes/operons collectively forming a regulon are often non-contiguous on the genome and share common regulatory sequences, such as activator binding sites (initiators) or operators (see OPERON MODEL), each of which is recognized by the same regulator molecule. A regulon may be positively controlled by an activator protein, as in the maltose regulon of ESCHERICHIA COLI, or negatively controlled by a repressor protein, as in the arginine regulon of E.coli.
