Trumpeter Birds

 

(Psophiidae), a family of birds of the order Gruiformes. It includes one genus, Psophia, with three species and is found in South America. The common trumpeter (Psophia crepitans) has a body up to 50 cm long and wings up to 30 cm wide. Its plumage is loose, its wings are rounded, and its tail is short. Its color is predominantly black, with a metallic gloss in places. The trumpeter flies poorly but runs quickly. It stays in flocks and is a sedentary bird, building its nests in broad hollows, with six to ten white eggs in a clutch. The trumpeter raises its chicks in a brood. It feeds on plants and insects.
