Inokhodtsev, Petr Borisovich
Born Nov. 21 (Dec. 2), 1742, in Moscow; died Oct. 27 (Nov. 8), 1806, in St. Petersburg. Russian astronomer. Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1779). Member of the Russian Academy from 1785.
Inokhodtsev was instrumental in the training of navigators in astronomical observations. In 1769 at Gur’evo he observed the transit of Venus across the sun’s disk. He participated in the work of the Academy of Sciences on the joining of the Volga and the Don rivers (1771–74). From 1781 to 1785 he determined the geographic latitudes and longitudes of a number of cities in Russia. Inokhodtsev participated in the compilation of a dictionary of the Russian language by the Russian Academy.
