Uropygi[‚yu̇r·ə′pī‚jī] (invertebrate zoology) The tailed whip scorpions, an order of arachnids characterized by an elongate, flattened body which bears in front a pair of thickened, raptorial pedipalps set with sharp spines and used to hold and crush insect prey. Uropygi (also Telyphones, Holopeltidia), an order of relatively large flagellate arachnids measuring approximately 7 cm in length. The thorax and head are grown together, and the abdomen ends in a long segmented tail-like limbo. Uropygi, distributed mainly in the tropics, are nocturnal insectivorous predators. They are harmless to man. One species, Typopeltis amurensis, is found in the USSR, in forests of Ussuri Krai.
