Size: 2,659 acres (battlefield) and 8.7 acres (cemetery).
Established: Established as a national military park on July 3, 1926; redesignated a national battlefield on August 24, 1962.
Location:Visitor center of park's main unit is east of the City of Petersburg, Virginia, just off VA 36. The Five Forks Battlefield is 25 miles southwest of the visitor center at the intersection of VA 613 and 627. The City Point Unit is located in the City of Hopewell, accessible from the visitor center via VA 36 and 156 to VA 10.
Facilities:Picnic area, bicycle trail, visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, auto tours, living history programs.
Special Features:The Union Army waged a ten-month campaign here in 1864-1865 to seize Petersburg, center of the railroads supplying Richmond and General Robert E. Lee's army. Park includes City Point in Hopewell, Virginia, where Ulysses S. Grant made his headquarters at Appomattox Manor for the final ten months of the war; and the Five Forks Battlefield, where the Confederate collapse led to the fall of the city and ultimately of Richmond. Poplar Grove (Petersburg) National Cemetery -- 6,315 interments; 4,110 unidentified -- is near the park.
