Petaurus
Petaurus (lesser gliding possum), a genus of mammals of the family Phalangeridae. The body measures 12–32 cm in length, and the tail 15–48 cm. Gliding membranes extend along the sides of the body between the front and hind limbs. The animals can glide as much as 55 m. There are three species, which are distributed in Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea and on some nearby islands. Individuals of two other related genera of Phalangeridae, Acrobates and Schoinobates, each with a single species, are also referred to as gliding possums. Petaurus
